Short stories of awakening to life.

Here are short excerpts from each of the four included stories -
The Old Cyprus
It was my first morning at Esalen, the famous (or infamous, depending on your viewpoint) Big Sur institute and educational resort.
Last night I had spent so long in the impeccably crafted stone tubs half way down the cliff overlooking the ocean that my skin was still puckery.
Now I was sitting across the table from Dorothy, eating a bagel and drinking Rejuvalac.
Her smile alone could have broken the heart of a Don Juan, let alone a 30s-something country boy not too long away from the small towns of Vermont.
On top of that, she was young - early 20''s - and stunningly attractive with an innocent exuberance that was exciting and infectious.
"Have you finished?" she asked.
"Come with me, I want to show you something."
Who am I to say no, or ask questions? "OK," I replied.
The Door Opens
"I can''t, I can''t, I can''t," I moaned, sick with fear, sweat beading on my forehead and running into my eyes.
My stomach was in knots. My fingernails were digging into my palms.
"Yes, you can. If you want to," she replied softly. "Or you can go on with your life the way it has been, with that fear pushed down inside.
But you can never forget that it''s there, and you know it keeps you from getting what you want.
Keeps you from feeling safe, from being strong, from being alive!"
"I know, I know." I admitted, between gasps for air. "But I''m so scared. It feels like I''ll die if I open the door."
She chuckled softly. "You won''t die, I promise. I''m here, right beside you, and I promise that you won''t die. Not now, not here.
Black Angel
It was Easter Sunday morning, and I had promised Debbie to go to church and hear her sing.
Debbie was a lovely, sweet spirited girl several years into her battle with MS.
She was one of the most cheerful, even-tempered women I had ever met. And she had a voice that, even in her casual singing as she went about her duties at the resort, could bring tears to your eyes.
Zen Bullet
It was a late fall evening in New England. The sun shone softly through the many layers of multi-colored leaves, as Buddy finally decided to pack it in and head on home.
The last day of the last weekend of deer season, and he hadn''t gotten his buck. In truth, he had never gotten his buck, or a buck, or any buck for that matter.
He kicked angrily at a pile of leaves, and reached into his hunting bag for a beer. "Great, my last beer, too."
He popped the top off the now very warm beer, and poured half of it down his throat. Well, almost half, except for what went down the front of his vest.
